Hector Neris Blows First Save of Season
7 years agoThe Philadelphia Phillies entered the ninth inning with a one-run lead as manager Gabe Kapler handed closer Hector Neris the ball for the final three outs. The Dominican native’s night got off to an ominous start, as he surrendered a leadoff double. Once the next runner singled, putting runners on the corners with nobody out, it became obvious that Neris would need a miracle to escape with the save. A third consecutive hit erased the lead, but after a sacrifice bunt put runners on third and second with one out, Neris managed to strike out the final two batters, escaping the inning. The Phillies would walk off on Scott Kingery’s sacrifice fly in the 12th inning.
