Giovanny Gallegos Adjusting To Pitch Timer
2 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Giovanny Gallegos knows that he'll need to pick up his pace on the mound in 2023 given the changes to MLB rules -- pitchers are now mandated to throw a pitch within 15 seconds of receiving the ball from the catcher with the bases empty. Gallegos was one of baseball's slowest workers on the mound last year with the bases empty. "It's hard for me. It's a new experience and a big challenge for me," Gallegos said. "I am trying to make some adjustments about the timing, but it's a big change." The 31-year-old said he had a faster pace when he came up with the New York Yankees as a starter, but his tempo slowed as a reliever. He converted only 14 of 20 save chances in 2022 and lost the closing gig to Ryan Helsley. Even without saves, Gallegos is valuable in holds leagues after posting a 3.05 ERA with 73 K's in 59 innings pitched.
