Frankie Montas Named Opening Day Starter
9 months agoManager David Bell announced on Sunday that Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas will be the team's Opening Day starter. This is a bit of a surprise with young 2017 first-round draft pick Hunter Greene in the mix, but Greene hasn't made a statement this spring that he's ready to be the guy, continuing to walk too many batters (seven walks in three spring starts). Montas' numbers aren't exactly dazzling this spring either, but he's shown to be a leader and mentor for the young staff, and now he's been awarded with the honor of starting on Opening Day. The 30-year-old missed basically all of last season, but in 2022 the righty posted a 4.05 ERA, 3.77 SIERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a K-BB% of 16.3%. While he may be the Reds' "ace" right now, for typical 12-team roto leagues he's not a draftable asset at this point, ranked 391 overall at RotoBaller.
