Fernando Tatis Jr. Hopes To Make Opening Day Roster
6 years agoSan Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., the team's top prospect and No. 2 overall in baseball, is hoping to make the Opening Day roster after opening eyes in spring training. The Padres intend to push their roster decision on Tatis back until the last possible moment, and it still seems likely that he'll begin in the minor leagues due to service-time stipulations and the fact that Tatis hasn't had any at-bats above Double-A. In 55 Cactus League plate appearances, the 20-year-old slashed .265/.345/.490 with two home runs and also made improvements on defense. If Tatis begins on the farm as is expected, Luis Urias should hold down the 6 with Ian Kinsler at the keystone.
