Fernando Tatis Jr. Going On Injured List
5 years agoSan Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. (back) is going on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a back strain. The National League Rookie Of the Year candidate was hitting a team-high .317, but he suffered back spasms on Tuesday against the Rays. In a corresponding move, infielder Ty France was called up from Triple-A El Paso. He's playing second base and hitting seventh on Friday against Phillies starter Vince Velasquez. It's Tatis' second trip to the injured list this year, as he missed 34 games earlier in the year with a hamstring injury. He's one of the most dynamic young players at a premium position, so he needs to be stashed everywhere. France hit just .235 (23-for-98) with two homers and 10 RBI in 34 games in SD earlier this year, but he was tearing up Triple-A to the tune of a .399/.477/.770 slash line, 27 homers and 89 RBI in 76 games with El Paso. With Ian Kinsler also sidelined by injury, France could see regular playing time and become mixed league relevant down the stretch.
