Edwin Diaz Picks Up 18th Save In Nerve-Wracking Fashion
3 years agoNew York Mets relief pitcher Edwin Diaz picked up his 18th save of the season in a somewhat eventful outing on Monday in the Mets 4-2 win over the Brewers. Called on to preserve a 3-run lead in the ninth inning, Diaz allowed a single, a walk, and a run-scoring single, before retiring a batter. He ultimately settled down to retire the next three batters. In his one inning of work, Diaz allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out two. He has now converted 18-of-19 save opportunities this season and owns a 3.03 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 43 strikeouts over 32 2/3 innings pitched. As one of the best relievers in baseball, Diaz should remain active in all formats. He should get a large number of save opportunities in the second half of the season pitching for the contending, but poor hitting Mets who are frequently locked into close games.
