Edwin Diaz Injured While Celebrating Puerto Rico's WBC Win
2 years agoTeam Puerto Rico toppled the Dominican Republic by a 5-2 tally to advance to the quarterfinals. After New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz (knee) closed out the game, his right knee blew out during the celebration, and he exhibited extreme discomfort. Diaz was helped off the field by his teammates without putting any pressure on his right leg. The 28-year-old will undergo further testing to determine the severity of the damage, but the scene itself wasn't too promising. Puerto Rico will have to manage without their star closer for the remainder of the tournament, and it appears that the injury will shut him down for quite some time. The Mets will need to reweigh their closing options if the injury is season-ending. Adam Ottavino, David Robertson, and Brooks Raley are candidates to be the Mets' primary closer while Diaz is sidelined.
