1 year agoMiami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo an MRI, according to manager Skip Schumaker. The right-hander was supposed to take the mound on Sunday, but didn't due to shoulder tightness. The organization said that it was a precautionary move, but it makes sense that they want to do imaging as well. Cabrera was off to a hot spring, so hopefully, it's just a minor setback for him. Fantasy managers will have to check back later after the imaging is done.--Andy Webb - RotoBaller

4 days agoMiami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (finger) made a minor-league rehab start on Tuesday for Triple-A Jacksonville and allowed one earned run on three hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out four in three innings of work. The only run Cabrera allowed was on a solo homer in the second inning, and it was good to see the 26-year-old finish without allowing a free pass and throwing 27 of his 46 pitches for strikes. He was forced to start the regular season on the 15-day injured list to another blister issue on his finger during spring training, and he's likely to need another rehab start or two before the Marlins have him rejoin their major-league starting rotation. Cabrera will have a spot in the rotation if healthy, but he's had a hard time staying on the field early in his MLB career while also displaying command/control problems.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 days agoMiami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (finger) will start a minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday at Triple-A Jacksonville. Cabrera is on the injured list to begin the 2025 regular season due to yet another blister issue on his right middle finger that surfaced on March 13 during his spring training start. However, the 26-year-old is already ready to start his rehab assignment and may only need a couple of outings in the minors before he's activated and rejoins Miami's starting rotation. Cabrera is officially eligible to come off the IL on April 7. Fantasy managers in most mixed leagues can probably take a wait-and-see approach on the Dominican hurler when he's ready to return. He's been incredibly inconsistent and injury-prone in his four years in the majors and went 4-8 in 2024 with a 4.95 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 107:50 K:BB in 96 1/3 frames over 20 starts.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 weeks agoMiami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (finger) will throw a bullpen session on Monday and pitch in a simulated game on Wednesday, according to MLB.com's Justin Morris. Because of a recurring blister issue on the middle finger of his right hand that cropped up during a Grapefruit League outing on March 13, Cabrera will open the 2025 season on the injured list. However, the 26-year-old wasn't shut down for long and might only miss several starts before being activated from the IL in April. The Dominican hurler has flashed intriguing stuff at times, but injuries and poor command/control have made him far too inconsistent for the likes of most fantasy managers. When healthy, though, Cabrera will be cemented into Miami's starting rotation and will be worth rostering in at least NL-only leagues in hopes that he can improve his command and stay healthy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoMiami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (finger) will start the 2025 season on the injured list due to a blister issue on his right middle finger, according to MLB.com's Christina De Nicola. Cabrera was forced to leave his Grapefruit League start last Thursday with the blister issue, which has been a recurring theme for him, and now he won't be ready for the start of the regular season next week. The good news is that the 26-year-old played catch on Monday, so hopefully it will be a minimum IL stay for Cabrera. In the meantime, Connor Gillispie could have the upper hand on replacing Cabrera in Miami's Opening Day rotation based on how good he's looked in spring training. Cabrera has the stuff to be intriguing in fantasy leagues, but injuries and lack of command/control of his pitches makes him avoidable in shallow-mixed leagues, especially now that he's hurt yet again.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
