Diamondbacks Closing Situation Will Be Fluid This Year
2 years agoArizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the team's closing situation this year will be "fluid in that area." "What I've done for the past six years is, I've always had a closer. That's just how my mind works. But I've got to evolve a little bit in that area. So if I feel the need to I will [name a closer], if somebody emerges I might, but for right now it's very fluid. I haven't yet made up my mind about naming somebody as our ninth-inning guy," Lovullo said. The names in the mix to be Arizona's closer in 2023 include recently signed Andrew Chafin, Kevin Ginkel, Joe Mantiply, Mark Melancon and Miguel Castro. Melancon has the most experience of the group with over 200 career saves, but Lovullo also has some experience relying heavily on Chafin as a reliever in the past. Melancon began last year as the team's closer and finished with 18 saves, but he also struggled with an ERA close to 5.00.
