Red Wings Ecstatic To Land Joe Veleno At 30th Overall
7 years agoThe Detroit Red Wings added Joe Veleno to the list of players they did not expect to still be available for their time on the clock. The 6-foot-1, 191-pound playmaking center of the Drummondville Voltigeurs became the 30th pick at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. On the NHL’s midterm scouting rankings, Veleno was 13th among North American skaters. At season’s end, he had ascended to eighth. Veleno was granted exceptional status to enter the CHL and has since played three seasons split between the Saint John Sea Dogs and Drummondville. Seventy nine points this season was a career high for him and he has also been a consistent postseason scorer with 29 points in 45 postseason games. Veleno has drawn comparisons to Dylan Larkin and Mathew Barzal. He will likely benefit from another season in the QMJHL.
