Danny Jansen Starting Slow On Offense
6 years agoToronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen, who has a rigorous pre-game routine as a catcher, is hitting just .183/.261/.232 in 93 plate appearances over 27 games to begin the year. While the 24-year-old hasn't lived up to expectations with the bat, his strides as a defender behind the plate have taken precedence over everything else. Jansen rates as the third catcher at 3.1 runs above average per FanGraphs. The Blue Jays understand that the work he's putting in on defense is impacting his ability to prepare as a hitter. Jansen is making more hard contact than he did last year, but he's also hitting way more ground balls (52.5 percent). He's still young and could improve as the season wears on, but he's only an option in two-catcher or AL-only leagues at the moment.
