D-Backs Land Carson Kelly, Luke Weaver
6 years agoThe Arizona Diamondbacks acquired catcher Carson Kelly, starting pitcher Luke Weaver, infielder Andy Young and a Compensation Round B pick in next year's draft from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday in exchange for first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Goldy is a superstar but had just one year left on his deal and the D-backs weren't going to sign him to a long-term extension. With just Alex Avila and John Ryan Murphy on roster, Kelly will have a great chance to win the majority of playing time behind the plate in 2019. Once a top Cards prospect, he has struggled to hit major league pitching, batting just .154 with no homers in 131 plate appearances over the last three years. Weaver is the centerpiece of the return for Arizona, although he had a 4.95 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 121 K's in 136 1/3 innings over 30 outings (25 starts) last year. There is upside in his right arm, though, and he'll help replace Patrick Corbin in the rotation. Young hit .289/.379/.479 with 21 homers and 58 RBI with High-A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield last year.
