12 months agoChicago White Sox shortstop prospect Colson Montgomery currently has a .239/.314/.283 throughout his small taste of Triple-A. The number two ranked shortstop prospect on MLB Pipeline quickly progressed through the minors last season as he never saw his on-base percentage dip below .400 across three levels. It is promising to see Montgomery continue to put up solid numbers as he is nearing his major league debut. Montgomery is considered a top prospect in baseball and should be rostered in all dynasty and keeper formats. If he continues to succeed at Triple-A, he could be worth stashing in redraft and be a solid middle infield option down the stretch, as he should be in contention to receive a late-season call-up.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoChicago White Sox shortstop prospect Colson Montgomery (back) is still in contention to make the Opening Day roster despite the missed time during camp. The infielder was sidelined for 10 days due to a back injury. However, manager Will Venable noted that his injury will not affect his chances of making the roster. Montgomery is considered one of the top prospects in the White Sox system. He was drafted with the 22nd overall selection in the 2021 MLB Draft. The 23-year-old spent the entire 2024 season at the Triple-A level and held a .214/.329/.381 line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. He swiped eight bags and carried a 69:164 BB:K. He showed progress during the final month of the season as he held a .264/.357/.458 line. If he were to make the roster, he will compete with Brooks Baldwin for an everyday role at shortstop.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoChicago White Sox shortstop prospect Colson Montgomery (back) is returning to the starting nine on Sunday to face the Cleveland Guardians. Montgomery will cover shortstop and bat in the six-hole. The top prospect in the Chicago system has been sidelined since the end of February due to back spasms. Given his missed time, fantasy managers should expect him to open the season at the Triple-A level. Last season, the former 22nd overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft spent his entire campaign with Triple-A Charlotte and held a .214/.329/.381 line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. He struggled to find consistency throughout the season but did begin to turn the corner in September as he posted a .223/.336/.401 line with four long balls. If the team were to send Montgomery to Triple-A at the start of the season, Brooks Baldwin will see most of the starting opportunities at shortstop in the majors.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoChicago White Sox shortstop prospect Colson Montgomery (back) remains sidelined and is expected to be re-evaluated following their off day on Tuesday. The 23-year-old is battling back spasms. The former first round pick has not participated in any baseball activities since the injury popped up last week. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his status during camp, but he may be facing an extended absence. At the start of spring training, Montgomery was expected to compete for the starting shortstop role. However, given this injury, the team may have him open the campaign at the Triple-A. The Southridge HS product spent the entire 2024 season at Triple-A and held a .214/.329/.381 slash line with 21 doubles and 18 home runs. If Montgomery were to open the season at Triple-A, Brooks Baldwin will likely get the starting nod at shortstop on Opening Day.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

1 month agoChicago White Sox shortstop prospect Colson Montgomery (back) was scratched from Thursday's Cactus League lineup against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians for precautionary reasons due to back spasms, according to MLB.com's Scott Merkin. Montgomery is considered day-to-day. It's not a serious injury, but it's something to keep an eye on with the 23-year-old, who is considered by MLB Pipeline to be the No. 39 overall prospect entering the 2025 season. While he hasn't exactly turned heads with his production in the minor leagues and doesn't have high-end speed, he could easily be considered Chicago's shortstop of the future, perhaps due to lack of better options. The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder does get on base often and has intriguing power. Montgomery should already be stashed in dynasty leagues and is worth a late-round flier in deep-mixed and AL-only leagues.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
