4 years agoThe Cleveland Indians signed free-agent outfielder Billy Hamilton to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training on Thursday, according to a report by Venezuela-based journalist Daniel Alvarez Montes. The 30-year-old played in 36 games with the Cubs and Mets in 2020. Hamilton, along with Ben Gamel, who also signed Thursday, the Tribe will a large outfield group that includes Oscar Mercado, Bradley Zimmer, Daniel Johnson, Jordan Luplow, Josh Naylor, Eddie Rosario and Jake Bauers. Hamilton will likely be insurance for Mercado in center field. The speedy outfielder stole at least 56 bases from 2014-17 and was second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting in 2014. But his most productive year at the plate was when he hit .260/.321/.343 with three homers and 17 RBI in 119 games. He'll be a source of steals in deep mixed and AL-only leagues if he finds his way into regular playing time.
