Chad Bettis Picks Up Extra Inning Win
6 years agoIn the newest chapter of the starter-turned-reliever story, Colorado Rockies former starter Chad Bettis threw his first relief inning of 2019 on Friday, and his team bailed him out. After a couple quick outs, Bettis gave up a pair of hits that resulted in the go-ahead run for Philadelphia in the top of the 12th inning, but Charlie Blackmon's walk-off shot to right-center in the bottom of the inning turned Bettis from likely loser to surprise winner. As with many similar stories, the thought is that moving Bettis to the bullpen will allow him to pick up some additional velocity on his pitches and make him more effective. While the latter part remains to be seen, the former proved to be true on Friday. Bettis averaged 94.2 MPH on his fastballs on Friday night after averaging just 88.7 MPH in his last start a week ago. Time will tell whether the rest of the experiment pans out.
