Carson Spiers Placed On 15-Day Injured List
9 months agoCincinnati Reds starting pitcher Carson Spiers (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday, July 13, due to a right shoulder impingement. The right-hander posted his best start of the season on Friday evening as he tallied a season-high nine punchouts across five innings of three-run ball. Unfortunately, the 26-year-old will now be sidelined till at least the end of July. In a corresponding move, the Reds promoted right-handed pitcher Tony Santillan to the major league roster. Santillan has operated out of the bullpen in Triple-A and is unlikely to claim the open rotation spot. Deeper NL-only league managers should pay close attention to who the Reds turn to fill the final rotation spot after the mid-summer classic.

Carson Spiers To Start For Reds Monday
10 months agoCincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that right-hander Carson Spiers will start on Monday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Spiers most recently served in a long-relief role on Sunday against the Chicago Cubs after he was called up from Triple-A Louisville, and he impressed with 5 2/3 shutout innings while striking out seven. The 26-year-old has made five relief appearances for the Reds over 19 1/3 innings this year, allowing six runs (five earned) on 19 hits while walking four and striking out 15. Spiers had been stretched out in a starting role for the Bats in the minors and had a nice 2.51 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 49 K's and 15 walks in 46 2/3 frames over nine outings (eight starts). For now, it's just a spot start for Spiers in a solid matchup, but if he pitches well again, he could stick in the rotation after the Reds demoted Graham Ashcraft to the minors recently.

Carson Spiers Continues To Look Sharp
1 year agoCincinnati Reds starting pitcher Carson Spiers was able to work his way onto the big league roster as a COVID-19 replacement player. The young right-hander made four appearances (two starts) for the Reds down the stretch of the season. He has continued to have success afterwards in the Arizona Fall League. The 25-year-old has a 1.29 ERA with a 7/1 K/BB ratio through two starts in the AFL. There's a good chance that Spiers gets an extended look in Cincinnati at some point next season.
