Caleb Smith Ejected For Use Of Foreign Substances
3 years agoArizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Caleb Smith was ejected from Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies for the illegal use of foreign substances on his glove. Smith entered the game in the sixth inning and went on to pitch 2 2/3 innings before the ejection in the eighth inning. The four umpires in the game all gathered in the eighth inning to inspect Smith's glove and all agreed that a foreign substance was present. After the game, Smith denied any wrongdoing, saying, "I know the two main things they check is your glove and your hat. If I was using something, and I wasn't, I wouldn't put it on my glove or my hat. That's just ignorant." Smith faces a 10-game suspension and the team won't be able to replace him on the 26-man roster while he serves the suspension.
