11 months agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Bryan Bello (lat) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and could have an up-and-down, two-inning simulated outing next, with a possible minor-league rehab start coming next Tuesday. Bello's bullpen session this week was his first time throwing off a mound since he dealt with right-lat tightness last week and was placed on the injured list. It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old will need more than one rehab start before returning to Boston's starting rotation. A popular breakout candidate in 2024, the Dominican hurler went 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA (4.06 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with seven walks and 26 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings over his first five starts of the season before going on the shelf. If he was dropped when he landed on the IL, fantasy managers should look go scoop him up off the waiver wire.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

6 days agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (shoulder) is still on track to make another minor-league rehab start for the Triple-A Worcester WooSox on Sunday, according to MassLive's Christopher Smith. In his first rehab start for the WooSox on Tuesday, Bello struggled, allowing four earned runs on four hits while walking two and striking out five in 2 1/3 innings of work while throwing 47 pitches. The good news is he didn't have any setbacks with his right shoulder, and he'll look to increase his pitch count this weekend. If he emerges from Sunday's outing healthy, the 25-year-old could be activated from the 15-day injured list to make his 2025 debut late next week. When Bello does return, lefty Sean Newcomb will likely be the odd-man out of Boston's rotation. Bello won't be able to take the next step for fantasy managers until he lowers his walk rate.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 days agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (shoulder) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab start for the Triple-A Worcester WooSox on Tuesday, according to MassLive's Christopher Smith. Bello suffered a right-shoulder strain right at the start of spring training in mid-February and was unable to pitch at all in the Grapefruit League as a result. The 25-year-old is expected to make at least two rehab appearances for Worcester, and barring any setbacks, he could be ready to come off the 15-day injured list when he's first eligible on Friday, April 11. When the BoSox do clear Bello to make his 2025 debut and return to the starting rotation, left-hander Sean Newcomb will likely be the odd-man out of Boston's rotation. Bello has so far been inconsistent and has struggled with keeping the ball in the yard and with his command.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

4 weeks agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (shoulder) won't be ready for the start of the 2025 regular season after dealing with right-shoulder inflammation in spring training, according to manager Alex Cora. With Bello out of the mix for the Opening Day starting rotation, Richard Fitts, Quinn Priester and Cooper Criswell are all in the mix to break camp as the No. 5 starter. Although Bello will begin the year on the injured list, the Red Sox expect him to make his season debut in April, so there's a chance he may only end up missing one or two turns through the rotation. He will likely pitch up to four innings in the Opening Series at Triple-A Worcester. The 25-year-old has been throwing off a mound since the beginning of March, so he's not all that far behind the other pitchers. With his injury, Bello has slipped outside RotoBaller's top-100 starting-pitcher rankings.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoBoston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello (shoulder) is unlikely to be ready for Opening Day. Manager Alex Cora noted that the right-hander is progressing well but he is still behind. Bello has been dealing with shoulder soreness throughout most of camp and will now likely open the season on the injured list. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status in case he begins to turn the corner. If Bello were to open the season sidelined, fantasy managers should expect Richard Fitts or Quinn Priester to compete for the open spot in the rotation. Last season, Bello logged a career-high 162 1/3 innings of work. He posted a 4.49 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP. He tallied 153 punchouts and held a high 9.3 percent walk rate. However, he did generate a solid 51.3 percent ground-ball rate. When he is cleared to return, he will carry value in deeper standard formats.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
