Brad Keller Could Be Poised For Breakout
6 years agoKansas City Royals starting pitcher Brad Keller was a Rule 5 pickup last year and instead of disappearing into the void like the vast majority of such claimed players, Keller was lights-out. Initially, he thrived off his sinker and a sky high ground ball rate. That severely limited his fantasy value because a strikeout rate of just 5.12 K/9 isn't a useful number in fantasy. However, in the second half, Keller began to lean more on his slider, and his strikeout rate jumped to 7.01 K/9. Now, that's still not an elite number, and he's still going to heavily use his sinker to keep the ball on the ground. That said, he's only 23 years old, and Dallas Keuchel was a force to be reckoned with for a few years while never topping a strikeout rate of 8.38/9. Keller would have to walk the same fine line Keuchel walked to be able to make the jump, but he's at least an interesting candidate to do it.
