A's Planning To Promote Zack Gelof To Big Leagues On Friday
2 years agoThe Oakland Athletics are adding No. 3 prospect Zack Gelof to their 40-man roster and are planning to call him up in time for Friday's series opener against the Minnesota Twins to kick off the start of the second half of the season, according to a source. With Gelof being promoted, the A's are also promoting No. 14 prospect Darell Hernaiz from Double-A to Triple-A Las Vegas. Gelof gets the promotion after hitting .304/.401/.529 with a .929 OPS, 12 home runs, 21 doubles, a triple, 44 RBI, 20 stolen bases and 60 runs scored in 308 plate appearances over 69 games in Vegas. The 23-year-old should take over as the team's starting second baseman, so he's worth a waiver-wire addition in deep-mixed leagues. Gelof has an intriguing combination of an advanced approach at the plate and exciting raw power, but the lowly A's will likely keep his fantasy floor somewhat low in his first taste of the big leagues.

Zack Gelof Has Successful Surgery On Monday
4 days agoThe Athletics announced that second baseman Zack Gelof (hand) had successful surgery on his right hamate bone in Los Angeles on Monday. Dr. Steven Shin performed the procedure on Gelof's right wrist, and the second baseman will start his rehab in West Sacramento this week. With the 25-year-old set to open the regular season on the injured list and miss six to eight weeks, prospect Max Muncy has made the Opening Day roster for the A's and should see regular playing time at the keystone. In his first full season in the big leagues in 2024, Gelof struggled, hitting just .211 (105-for-497) with 17 homers, 49 RBI, 25 stolen bases and a league-leading 188 strikeouts in 138 games played. Now that he'll miss the first month of the season, he's likely only worth stashing in AL-only and dynasty formats. Muncy has above-average power and speed and could stick around as a utility infielder for the A's once Gelof returns.

Zack Gelof To Undergo Hand Surgery
5 days agoAthletics infielder Zack Gelof (hand) is unfortunately going to start the season on the injured list. Gelof will undergo surgery to repair a hamate bone fracture in his right hand. The A's haven't given a timetable on Gelof, but often times players with this procedure miss close to two months. This is obviously a frustrating blow to the A's considering Gelof is a promising young infielder. The 25-year-old figures to be the primary option at second base once he's ready to play again. In the meantime, Luis Urias is likely to see a majority of the starts over at second base.

Zack Gelof To Undergo Further Testing
6 days agoAthletics infielder Zack Gelof (hand) was pulled out of a game earlier this week after getting hit by a pitch on the right hand. He underwent X-rays that came back negative, so there doesn't appear to be anything seriously wrong with his hand. However, the A's are going to have Gelof undergo further testing because his hand hasn't shown any improvement since the incident. Fantasy managers should be prepared for Gelof possibly missing Opening Day on Thursday. The team is obviously going to wait and see how Gelof progresses over the next few days before making any final decisions.

X-Rays Come Back Negative For Zack Gelof
1 week agoX-rays have come back negative for Athletics second baseman Zack Gelof (hand) after he was it by a pitch on his right hand in a Cactus League game on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians. Gelof is dealing with a little bit of swelling on his hand, though, so he'll be held back from baseball activities on Thursday. The A's will re-evaluate the 25-year-old on Friday, but the team thinks he will be fine. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Gelof return to spring games this weekend, and he should be fine for Opening Day next week. The former second-rounder in 2021 out of the University of Virginia has hit .314 with two homers and eight RBI in 14 Cactus League games, but he's merely middle-infield depth in deep-mixed leagues after he hit just .211 with a league-high 188 strikeouts in only 138 games in 2024 in his sophomore season.
