Alexander Khovanov Selected By Wild In Third Round
6 years agoWith their second pick of the third round, the Minnesota Wild selected Russian center Alexander Khovanov. The Saratov, Russia native came overseas to join the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL but performed only marginally better than his 2016-17 season with he MHL’s Irbis Kazan. Illness held him out of play at the Ivan Hlinka tournament and much of Moncton’s season. He elected to recover at home in Russia and made his QMJHL debut in late December. The playmaking center did well to return to form, scoring 28 points in 29 games in Moncton and added seven more in 12 postseason games. Having been touted as a potential late first-rounder, Minnesota getting Khovanov late in the third could turn into a steal should he be able to reach his potential and fit into a second-line center role. His vision and playmaking are top skills, but he needs to work on explosiveness and acceleration.
