Alex Reyes Enters 2018 Without a Set Role
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Alex Reyes is already in Jupiter, Fla., getting a head start on spring training. The young right-hander is recovering from last year's Tommy John Surgery, and the team has set May 1 as a goal for having him back on the mound. What they have not yet set, though, is what role he will take on once he returns. The team wants to be cautious with Reyes, and while they fully expect him to anchor their starting rotation for years to come, he may work out of the bullpen to get his 2018 started. He'd likely work in middle relief at first, but there's always the chance that he could work his way into significant innings, perhaps even a ninth-inning role. The Cardinals know they have a great pitcher in Reyes, so it will be interesting to see how they use him and how they soften his landing. He's a risky fantasy pick for now in redraft leagues, because he'll miss the first month of the season and won't have much value as a middle reliever, but he has the upside to be worth drafting in most formats.
