8 months agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin needs 42 more goals to pass Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time top goal-scorer. Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery and general manager Chris Patrick each believe we could witness history during the upcoming campaign. "Do I think he can score 42 goals this year? Yes, I do," Carbery said Monday. "I absolutely think he's capable of that." Newly-appointed Patrick shares the belief, saying, "'Ovi' has done so many things that people never thought he could do, so I think it's on the table for sure." Ovechkin's scoring rate has dropped in recent seasons, but he still managed a 30-goal year last term despite an awfully slow first half of the campaign, which included a career-worst 14-game goal drought. Fantasy managers shouldn't panic if Ovechkin is slow out of the gate again.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

3 days agoWashington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin tied Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history against the Chicago Blackhawks in a 5-3 win on Friday. The Capitals captain finished the contest with two goals, opening the scoring less than four minutes into the game and adding another one -- a power-play goal -- in the third period, with Gretzky watching from the stands. Ovechkin now has 894 regular-season goals through 1,486 career games, including 41 markers in 60 outings this season. The Russian superstar, who boasts 68 points for the campaign, has relentlessly chased Gretzky's record this season and will get his next opportunity to break it on Sunday against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin will enter the matchup with a four-game goal streak.--Taavi Pailk - RotoBaller

6 days agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin tallied two points during their 4-3 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday evening. Ovechkin found the back of the net on the power play in the opening frame. This goal put him just four away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. Later in the third, Ovechkin would add the secondary assist on Tom Wilson's 32nd goal of the campaign. Ovechkin has now scored in back-to-back games and scored three in his last four. Since March 1, Ovechkin has found the back of the net eight times and added 10 helpers across 15 contests. During this stretch, he has logged an impressive 50 shots on goal. Through 58 total games this season, the 39-year-old has scored 38 goals and tallied 27 assists. He remains a must-start player as he chases history.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

3 weeks agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin tallied two points during their victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Ovechkin tallied the primary helper on Dylan Strome's opening goal. Later in the third period, Ovechkin would find the back of the net, which put him just eight goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's record. During this contest, Ovechkin logged four total shots on goal with two hits. Over his previous 11 contests, the future Hall of Famer has found the back of the net eight times and added four helpers. During this stretch he averaged an impressive 4.1 shots on goal per game. Through 51 total games this season, Ovechkin has scored 34 goals and 21 helpers with nine of his goals coming on the power play. He remains a must-start player and a top option in DFS as he continues to chase history.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

2 months agoWashington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net during their 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Ovechkin scored in the first frame on a snap shot that beat Flyers netminder Ivan Fedotov. This goal extended his goal-scoring streak to an impressive four games. During this four-game stretch, Ovechkin has tallied six points (four goals, two helpers), 3.5 shots on goal per game, three hits per game, and one blocked shot. Ovechkin is also just 16 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky. Over his previous 12 contests, Ovechkin has tallied 10 points (seven goals and three helpers). Fantasy managers should continue to view the 39-year-old as an elite goal-scoring producer. He will look to stay hot on Sunday when the Capitals host the Utah Hockey Club.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
