Adbert Alzolay Plays Catch
6 months agoChicago Cubs right-hander Adbert Alzolay (forearm) played catch on Monday in Arizona for the first time in his rehab and threw from a distance of 60 feet. Alzolay was initially shut down on May 22 and was moved to the 60-day injured list on June 2, so he won't be eligible to return to the Cubs' bullpen until after the All-Star break in mid-July. It sounds like Alzolay is making progress, but he still has a ways to go and will need at least several minor-league rehab appearances before he's ready to go in the second half of the season. With Alzolay on the shelf, veteran reliever Hector Neris has become Chicago's primary options for saves late in games. Before his injury, Alzolay had four saves, a 4.67 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 13 K's and six walks in 17 1/3 relief innings. The Cubs could choose to ease him back into the closing mix when he's ready to return.
