Austin Nola Kicks Off Rehab Assignment With Two Hits
3 years agoSan Diego Padres catcher Austin Nola (knee) reached base in all three of his plate appearances, including two hits, and played five innings at first base in his first rehab appearance with Triple-A El Paso on Friday. The 31-year-old backstop has been on the injured list since late May with a left knee sprain. He's expected to rotate between first, second and designated hitter as he works his way back into catching again. Nola won't return until after the All-Star break in San Diego, but he's getting much closer. He'll be an option to split time with Victor Caratini behind the dish and could be worth a look in two-catcher leagues for his power. In 46 at-bats in 2021, Nola has a slash line of .217/.373/.326 with a homer and 11 RBI.
