Fernando Tatis Jr. Passing On Home Run Derby
4 years agoSan Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. said on Friday that he won't be participating in this year's Home Run Derby, largely because he doesn't want to risk further injury to his tender left shoulder. After the announcement, he proceeded to hit three home runs in the team's 11-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks, raising his National League-leading total to 25 on the year. Tatis is now tied with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. for the major league lead in home runs. He hit all three of his homers in the first four innings, becoming the first Padres player to ever do so. The 22-year-old has reached 25 long balls in only 59 games this year, becoming the fastest player ever to reach that mark at age 22 or younger. Tatis also became the youngest Padres player to hit three homers in a single game. His 13 total bases in the game tied a Padres single-game record. Tatis is slashing .293/.373/.702 with 25 homers and 15 steals. He's a beast.
