Max Scherzer Activated, Starting Against Phillies Tuesday
4 years agoThe Washington Nationals activated starting pitcher Max Scherzer (groin) from the 10-day injured list, and he will start the series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday. Scherzer was placed on the injured list last week after tweaking his groin in the first inning of his start on June 11. The three-time Cy Young winner is 5-4 on the year with a 2.21 ERA. In a corresponding move, the team placed reliever Kyle Finnegan (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list. The 36-year-old right-hander has fanned 104 and walked 15 in his 77 1/3 innings of work over 13 starts on the season, so he remains pretty much a must-start every time he toes the rubber. Scherzer is a bit more risky on Tuesday night in his first start back from the injured list, but he hasn't been out for long and is facing a Phillies team that he beat while allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings as recently as June 4.
