Rough First Inning Dooms Aaron Nola, Again
4 years agoPhiladelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola took his fourth loss of the season Friday night against the Red Sox. The Phillies' ace allowed five runs, four earned, as he's struggled mightily in recent starts, sporting a 5.20 ERA across his last five outings. His struggles in the first inning are the primary reason. Nola allowed two first-inning runs to the Red Sox and has now given up multiple runs in the first inning of three-straight starts. Nola gave fantasy managers something as he struck out nine, but it's hard to keep relying on Nola's strikeouts while his ratios balloon higher and higher after each start. Despite his struggles, it's even harder to envision benching Nola. He'll look to bounce back in a juicy matchup versus Miami next week.
