Danny Jansen Could See Reduced Role
4 years agoToronto Blue Jays starting catcher Danny Jansen could see his playing time reduced with the presence of rookie backstop Alejandro Kirk. The club recently announced it would be carrying Kirk and will likely not want the young player spending most of his time on the bench. The club has yet to announce a plan for Reese McGuire, a defensive expert who was the early favorite to back up Jansen in 2021. McGuire is without minor league options so he would need to be placed on waivers to be moved to the minors. It's possible that the Jays will initially keep three catchers on the roster. Jansen has produced two straight seasons with disappointing offensive contributions. Kirk contributed a 166 wRC+ in a brief big-league trial last season.
