Robinson Chirinos Diagnosed With Fractured Wrist
4 years agoNew York Yankees catcher Robinson Chirinos (wrist) was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, ending his bid to make the Opening Day roster as Gary Sanchez's backup. Chirinos was hit by a pitch in the Grapefruit League game on Wednesday night. Wrist and hand specialists will be consulted in the coming days to determine the next steps. The 36-year-old backstop hit .162 (12-for-74) with one home run and seven RBI in 26 games with the Mets and Rangers in 2020, and he was competing with Kyle Higashioka for a spot on the Yankees bench to begin the season. Chirinos is a career .231/.325/.431 hitter with 86 long balls and 269 RBI in 602 major league games with Texas, the Mets, Tampa and Houston. He'll obviously be out for an extended amount of time.
