4 years agoNew York Yankees catcher Robinson Chirinos (wrist) was diagnosed with a fractured right wrist, ending his bid to make the Opening Day roster as Gary Sanchez's backup. Chirinos was hit by a pitch in the Grapefruit League game on Wednesday night. Wrist and hand specialists will be consulted in the coming days to determine the next steps. The 36-year-old backstop hit .162 (12-for-74) with one home run and seven RBI in 26 games with the Mets and Rangers in 2020, and he was competing with Kyle Higashioka for a spot on the Yankees bench to begin the season. Chirinos is a career .231/.325/.431 hitter with 86 long balls and 269 RBI in 602 major league games with Texas, the Mets, Tampa and Houston.
