David Bote Part Of Cubs Second Base Competition

Chicago Cubs infielders Nico Hoerner, David Bote and Ildemaro Vargas will compete for the second base job this spring. Manager David Ross said that he isn't sure how the second base job will look to start the season, but said "All three of those guys can really play defense. Vargas is a switch-hitter we've got from both sides of the plate. David's got some years under his belt. Nico's coming. I think we'll see how it plays out here in spring, and we'll see if somebody steps up and kind of wins that job." Of the three options, Bote plays more of a super utility role and that can lead to him rotating along with Hoerner and Vargas depending on the matchup. Hoerner has the most upside of the three, but managers should consider letting this situation play out before pouncing on Hoerner, Bote or Vargas.
