Alex Colome 2021 Fantasy Outlook: A Mid-Tier Closer Due For Regression
4 years agoMinnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome has been depended on to close out games since 2016. He has accumulated 138 career saves in the process. In 2017 with the Rays, he even led the American league with 47 saves. For the past two seasons, Colome was the White Sox's stopper, and it has become apparent that he is quite comfortable in the closer's role. Last year was a fortunate one. Colome pitched to a 0.81 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP, although it came with a fantastically lucky .200 BABIP and an 86% strand rate. Some of his component skills are on the decline as well. His strikeout rate hit a six-year low at 18%, and his walk rate has grown over the past two seasons. He did compensate for fewer strikeouts in '20 with more ground balls, though, with a 52% ground-ball rate. In Minnesota, he could become the club's primary closer after Taylor Rogers and Sergio Romo split the duties a season ago. Colome still has enough skills to close games should he be tasked with the job, but don't overspend on a guy whose strikeout and walk rates are going in the wrong direction, especially since he may not have a firm grasp on the closer's gig in his new home.
