Cavan Biggio 2021 Outlook: Limited Physical Tools Create Significant Risk
5 years agoBlue Jays infielder Cavan Biggio posted a useful fantasy season in 2020, slashing .250/.375/.432 with eight homers and six steals over 265 PAs. You might think that the homers and steals mean that the 26-year-old has a ton of raw tools, but Biggio doesn't. His Statcast power indicators are mediocre at best (91.6 mph average airborne exit velocity, 5% Brls/BBE in 2020), so he gets his homers with a high volume of fly balls (40.8 FB% last year, 47% in '19) and a favorable home park rather than innate oomph. Likewise, his 27.7 ft./sec Statcast Sprint Speed is only above-average, meaning that Biggio needs to pick his spots more than true speed merchants do. Biggio dramatically improved his K% in 2020 (23 K% after a 28.6% mark in 2019), and his 16.3% chase rate indicated an elite understanding of the strike zone that inflates his value in OBP formats. Biggio is a fun guy to root for, but his 60 ADP makes him an expensive sign considering how easily his profile falls apart. He'll open the year as the Blue Jays' third baseman but he should hold multi-position eligibility in most leagues, including second base and the outfield.
