Willie Calhoun Has Surgery For Broken Jaw
5 years agoTexas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun (jaw) had surgery on Monday to fix a broken jaw after being hit in the face by a pitch on Sunday. Surgeons installed a plate to steady the fracture, which should make for a quicker recovery than if his jaw had to be wired shut. General manager Jon Daniels said Calhoun could be released from the hospital as early as Tuesday, and he'll be re-evaluated in two weeks, at which time the Rangers will have a better idea for a timetable for his return. It hasn't been determined if he also has a concussion, but Calhoun is likely to open the year on the injured list. The 25-year-old was a sleeper pick in mixed leagues before his injury, and he'll come even cheaper now. He hit 21 home runs in 309 at-bats in 2019 and is set to play mostly every day when he's healthy. Utility man Nick Solak should benefit the most from a playing-time perspective early in the year, and he's certainly worth a late-round flier in mixed leagues as well.
