6 years agoPittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jordan Lyles (hamstring) is nearing a return to the lineup after completing a four-inning simulated game Tuesday. Lyles did not experience any setbacks and could be in line to start as early as Sunday against the Padres, which would be a more than welcome sight to a depleted Pirates team. Lyles hasn't been very sharp in his last few starts but overall has proven valuable as a streaming option in deeper leagues and could be useful against a relatively light-hitting Padres squad if he gets activated this weekend.--Joseph Magazzinich

2 years agoKansas City Royals pitcher Jordan Lyles struggled on Tuesday against the visiting Seattle Mariners, surrendering six earned runs on the back of four home runs in five innings of work. The veteran allowed nine total hits and one walk against three strikeouts in five innings, however, his offense took him off the hook for the loss with a three-run ninth inning that tied the game before eventually losing in 10 innings. The long ball continues to decimate Lyles as he sports a 1.92 HR/9 on the season, the second-worst mark in baseball among 62 qualified pitchers and he also sports an elevated 1.40 HR/9 clip for his career. After Tuesday's outing, the right-hander now sports a 6.30 ERA in 23 starts, easily the worst mark in the big leagues among qualified hurlers.--Brenton Kemp

2 years agoThe Kansas City Royals and free-agent right-hander Jordan Lyles agreed to a two-year, $17 million deal on Tuesday. Lyles makes a lot of sense for a rebuilding team looking to eat up rotation innings. The 32-year-old had a 4.42 ERA (4.40 FIP), a 1.38 WHIP and an 18.6 percent strikeout rate while going 12-11 in 179 innings over 32 starts for the Baltimore Orioles. He was a little bit better than his career marks of a 5.10 ERA (4.68 FIP), a 1.43 WHIP and a 17.6 percent strikeout rate in 12 major-league seasons with seven different organizations. Lyles will move to a better division for pitchers in the American League Central, but he'll also be nothing more than a deep-league innings eater in fantasy.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 years agoThe Kansas City Royals and free-agent starting pitcher Jordan Lyles are reportedly close to a two-year deal, MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reported Monday. The 32-year-old journeyman provided valuable innings for the Orioles in 2022, going 12-11 with a 4.42 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and an 18.6% strikeout rate in 32 starts and 179 innings pitched. While these numbers are useful outside of fantasy consideration, they don't offer much in terms of fantasy upside, beyond occasional streaming opportunities in points leagues. Furthermore, the Royals offense would not provide much support if Lyles does sign there, further limiting his fantasy upside.--Connelly Doan - RotoBaller

2 years agoThe Baltimore Orioles are reportedly declining Jordan Lyles' $11 million option, per a tweet from The Athletic's Dan Connolly. Also per Connolly's tweet, regarding the Orioles and Lyles, "The sides will continue discussions, a source said, and so he could re-sign at a later date." The right-hander made 32 starts for the American League East club in 2022. He logged a 4.42 ERA and a 4.40 FIP in 179 innings and collected 144 strikeouts compared to 52 walks allowed. The veteran also tied a career-high with 12 wins. Baltimore's current rotation options include John Means, Tyler Wells, Kyle Bradish, Dean Kremer, Grayson Rodriguez, Austin Voth and Mike Baumann.--Ben Rosener - RotoBaller
