Trent Thornton Shuts Down Astros
5 years agoToronto Blue Jays pitcher Trent Thornton had one of the best starts of his young career on Sunday. He pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings against the Astros in Houston, allowing six hits and three walks while striking out seven. He is now 2-5 on the year with a 4.36 ERA. This was only the fourth time in 15 starts where Thornton completed six or more innings this year. His peripheral numbers don't look too bad, but there isn't much to suggest he's significantly better than a 4.36 ERA pitcher. Plus, he pitches in a tough division, has a weak offense supporting him and likely will continue to pitch fewer than six innings going forward. This game should give you more confidence in using him as a fill-in pitcher off the waiver wire, but he doesn't look like someone who needs to be added in most leagues, especially since his next start is another tough one on the road against Boston on Friday.
