Masahiro Tanaka's Quality Start Wasted
6 years agoNew York Yankees starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka out-pitched Justin Verlander on Monday night in Houston, but his bullpen failed to preserve the lead late in the game. The Japanese native went six strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out three and while his command seemed to falter as his performance wore on, he kept his slim lead intact, tossing just 78 pitches. That makes three starts of just one run surrendered to begin his season, which is about as good as the Yankees could ask for from their interim ace. Unfortunately, Monday he just wasn't meant to earn a victory.
