Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Corey Knebel did not have a smooth road to a save Friday versus Los Angeles. He came in with the Brewers up 6-4 in the ninth inning. He would allow an RBI triple that put the tying run 90 feet away before striking out Justin Turner to end the game. Knebel finished the season as the closer for the Brewers, which is a role he continued Friday. There are arguably more talented closers left in the playoffs but Milwaukee may be the most devoted to maximizing the use of their bullpen.--Jamie Mellor

The Chicago White Sox agreed to minor-league deals with right-handers Dominic Leone and Corey Knebel on Tuesday that include non-roster invites to spring training. The White Sox now have 68 players in camp, including 28 non-roster invitees. Leone and Knebel will provide much-needed depth for Chicago's bullpen this year. Leone, 32, pitched for the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners in 2023 and had an uninspiring 4.67 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, one save, 28 walks and 54 K's in 54 relief innings. Knebel, 32, tore his right-shoulder capsule in August of 2022 and hasn't pitched with a team since. He was an All-Star in 2017 with Milwaukee and has 72 career saves in eight big-league campaigns. Before his injury in 2022 with the Phillies, Knebel had a 3.43 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 12 saves, 28 walks and 41 strikeouts in 44 2/3 relief frames. Both pitchers will be battling for bullpen roles this spring.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

The Philadelphia Phillies placed reliever Corey Knebel (lat) on the 15-day injured list on Monday due to a right lat strain. So far this season, Knebel has pitched to a 3.43 ERA and a 4.46 FIP in 44.2 innings in his first year with the Phillies, striking out 41 batters and allowing 28 walks in the process. He's also registered 12 saves and a pair of holds. Philadelphia also reinstated right-handed pitcher Sam Coonrod from the 60-day injured list and designated left-handed pitcher Andrew Vasquez for assignment.--Ben Rosener - RotoBaller

Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Corey Knebel (lat) was removed in the seventh inning of Sunday's game against the New York Mets after throwing just 14 pitches. After the game, it was reported that he suffered a lat strain. He is scheduled to get an MRI on Monday, but the expectation ahead of the MRI is that he will require a stint on the injured list. Knebel began the year as the team's closer, but lost the job in mid-June. Since then, he has worked primarily as a low-leverage, late-inning reliever. He has a 3.43 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP on the year.--Andrew Ericksen - RotoBaller

Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Rob Thompson said that he'll start using closer Corey Knebel in lower-leverage spots and will rotate other relievers for closing situations, depending on the situation. Knebel injured his shoulder over the weekend and blew another save on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins when he allowed three unearned runs while walking two. The hard-throwing right-hander has 11 saves on the year, but he's also 2-5 with four blown saves, and he's posted a 4.26 ERA (8.66 FIP) with three earned runs allowed, seven walks and six strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings in seven games since May 29. Until he can right the ship, the Phillies will go with a committee approach involving lefty Brad Hand and Seranthony Dominguez.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller
