Danny Duffy Dominates Again
6 years agoKansas City Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy kept rolling by shutting down the Twins for seven innings in his first start back from the All-Star break. Duffy allowed just five hits while walking three and striking out four, and the bullpen held on just well enough to give Duffy his sixth win of the season. Duffy has been a new man recently, posting a shiny 2.58 ERA and 5-2 record since May 24. Unfortunately, there are a lot of concerns built into those numbers. Pretty much all the red flags are out as Duffy's strikeout rate is down, walk rate is up, BABIP is depressed, strand rate is artificially inflated, home run rate is way down, fly ball rate is elevated, and hard-hit rate is high. All these things lead to an xFIP of 4.67. That gap between his ERA and xFIP isn't sustainable, and neither is his current run of success. Duffy owners should see if they can sell him now.
