Jake Arrieta Stumbles To Kick Off Second Half
6 years agoKicking off the second half of the season, the first-place Philadelphia Phillies handed the ball to their first-year former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta, who was far from sharp. Taking on the lowly San Diego Padres, the 32-year-old only lasted 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on six hits. He was ineffective from the jump, surrendering four runs in the first inning. While his offense provided him with seven runs of support, he couldn’t right the ship, eventually allowing another run in the fourth before getting pulled. While the offense kept him from a defeat, Arrieta’s small stretch of improvement was snapped, as he entered the game following two victories of seven-inning performances.
