Luis Severino Strong In Opening Day Start
7 years agoBecoming the first pitcher not named Masahiro Tanaka to start for the New York Yankees on Opening Day in four years, Luis Severino had a strong first statement for the new season. The 24-year-old already held a two-run lead when tossed his first pitch, escaping an early jam with a strikeout after walking two batters. From then, it was smooth sailing, as he wound up allowing just one hit and one more walk through five innings. In the sixth, with one on and two out, manager Aaron Boone removed him from the game, with Chad Green retiring the final batter to close the book on Severino’s outing. In all, he allowed no runs, just one hit, and three walks, striking out seven en route to victory. This was exactly the start Severino needed to begin his first full season as the ace of a team considered a World Series candidate.
