Hyun-Jin Ryu Slowly Wades Back Into Relevancy
7 years agoIt seems like forever ago that Hyun-Jin Ryu burst onto the scene around the same time Yasiel Puig did. The Korean righty has been injured for most of the previous three seasons, but did manage to start 24 times and throw 126+ innings in 2017 with mixed results. He had a couple of eight and nine-strikeout games (once against the lowly Philies in five innings toward the start of the season). But by the end of the season, it was obvious that Ryu couldn’t handle the long grind after being on the DL for so long. The key for Ryu, like Kenta Maeda, is to minimize the home runs. Ryu posted career highs in homers (22) and had a HR/9 rate of 1.56. He still has the inside track for the fifth starter slot, but faces competition from Brock Stewart and top prospect Walker Buehler.
