Tanner Roark Fails To Deliver Big In 2017
Owners who drafted Tanner Roark last season were severely underwhelmed with his performance. He was, on average, the 32nd pitcher off the boards, according to the NFBC, which is somewhat understandable given the fact that he came in 10th in 2016's Cy Young voting. 2017 was altogether another story. Yes, he started 30 games and pitched 181 innings. His ground ball rate hovered around 48% for the third consecutive year and he struck out 166 batters. But it was home runs that did Roark in. He gave up a career high 23 dingers and his HR/FB rate was 13.5%, the second time it’s gone up into double digits over the last three years. Lefties were also tuning him up all season, and opposing teams were noticing. Fifteen of his homers were by left-handed batters and all season long they unloaded an .836 OPS on him. What you see is what you get with Roark, and his status as an SP4, both in real life and fantasy, might be all we’ll ever get.
