Brandon Maurer Should Be Avoided
7 years agoBrandon Maurer is slated to be the Royals setup man, and that should make for some exciting baseball in Kansas City. In 2015, Maurer went to San Diego and was the next in a long list of strong relievers to grace Petco. He put up a strong season as a setup man, and he was tagged to take over as a closer of the future after the Padres would ship off those in front of him in their constant stream of relievers for prospects. He did take over that job in 2016, but he wasn’t very good at it. He still got to keep it in 2017, and even though he continued to not be very good at the job, he was eventually traded to KC in the middle of the season. With the Royals, Maurer went from not very good to very bad. Maurer pitched 20 inning for Kansas City and allowed an incredible 18 earned runs. He did strike out 9.45 batters per nine innings, but he also walked nearly five per nine innings and allowed 1.80 HR/9. Expect Maurer’s 2018 to be better than 2017 was, but also expect that he will still be bad. Even in leagues that track holds, Maurer should not be owned anytime soon.
