Shane Greene Is A Late-Round Saves Candidate
7 years agoDetroit Tigers relief pitcher Shane Greene has always had nasty stuff, and because of that he became the Tigers' most reliable reliever in 2017. By season's end he had nailed down the job as the team's closer, but by that point the team was an absolute disaster. Greene notched nine saves and 14 holds over the course of the year, and pitched to a 2.66 ERA on the back of 9.71 K/9. But Greene was also prone to the longball (10.2 HR/FB%) and the free pass (4.52 BB/9), so the fact that his ERA remained so low is strange to say the least. Advanced metrics show that Greene actually had an xFIP of 4.24, which is far less appealing. Still, though, Greene has the closing job for the Tigers locked up this year and will rack up strikeouts whenever he pitches. The problem for fantasy owners is that he won't be in line for too many saves because the Tigers are, well... terrible. If you play in a deep league, Greene is worth a look in the later rounds and should be able to contribute 25 saves or so, but he should be an afterthought rather than a target for those looking for major relief help.
