Fantasy Baseball Injury Reports for Hitters - Updates for Jazz Chisholm Jr., Riley Greene, J.D. Martinez, Byron Buxton, Triston Casas, and more

Riley Greene - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Draft Sleepers, MLB Injury News

Fantasy baseball injury updates and injury reports for MLB hitters as of 8/14/2024, including Jazz Chisholm Jr., Riley Greene, J.D. Martinez, Byron Buxton, Triston Casas, and more.

The 2024 MLB season is approaching crunch time, and so is the fantasy baseball campaign. Injuries complicate fantasy lineup decisions, so it's important to stay in the know. That said, let's take a look at injured hitters Jazz Chisholm Jr., Riley Greene, J.D. Martinez, Byron Buxton, Triston Casas, and more.

This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for hitters as of August 14, 2024. Some players on this list impact fantasy baseball more than others, but with leagues of all shapes and sizes, you never know which guys will be important in lineups.

To keep close tabs on all of the news across the MLB, make sure to favorite or bookmark the fantasy baseball player news page, and download the free RotoBaller fantasy baseball mobile app with push notification alerts on all the latest news. Let's look at the injury updates for hitters.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. Injury Update

New York Yankees infielder/outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. (elbow) is expected to be placed on the injured list, according to manager Aaron Boone. This is not the news fantasy managers want to hear right now. Chisholm was off to an excellent start with the Bronx Bombers. He was hitting over .300 with seven home runs and five steals in 14 games. The 26-year-old suffered a left UCL injury while sliding into home plate during Monday's loss.

It sounds like the team still plans to do additional testing to determine the severity of the injury. The absence of Chisholm should mean more playing time for DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera at the hot corner. Neither player is going to be as reliable of a fantasy contributor. Cabrera is the better option between the two, as he's hitting .245 with eight home runs and 34 RBI in 86 games this season. Cabrera will bat eighth and play third base versus right-hander Jonathan Cannon on Tuesday.

Riley Greene Injury Update

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (hamstring), who is currently recovering from a right hamstring strain, completed another base-running session at Comerica Park on Tuesday and is scheduled to start a minor-league rehab assignment with the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on Thursday. Greene was initially slated to start his rehab assignment on Tuesday, but apparently, the Tigers wanted to get another look at him running the bases before giving him the final green light to play in games again.

The 23-year-old first-time All-Star could rejoin the Tigers' starting lineup later this weekend or early next week, barring any setbacks with his hammy. The former fifth overall pick in 2019 has already played in a career-high 101 games in 2024 and has provided fantasy managers with 17 homers, 51 RBI, and four steals in 427 trips to the plate while hitting .264 (98-for-371).

J.D. Martinez Injury Update

The New York Mets have announced that designated hitter J.D. Martinez (elbow) exited with a left elbow contusion in Tuesday night's series opener against the visiting Oakland Athletics at Citi Field. In Martinez's first at-bat of the game, Athletics right-hander Joe Boyle plunked him on the elbow with a 100-mph fastball. Mark Vientos (ankle), who had been day-to-day entering the day, replaced Martinez in the third inning. Martinez was able to stay in the contest to run the bases in the second inning, so his departure certainly feels like a precautionary measure.

Consider him day-to-day ahead of Wednesday's tilt against Oakland. The 36-year-old veteran slugger has been slumping lately for the Mets, batting .212 (18-for-85) with two home runs, 15 RBI, and six runs scored in his last 24 games since July 12. Tyrone Taylor is a candidate to join New York's starting nine if Martinez ends up sitting out a day or two.

Byron Buxton Injury Update

An MRI exam on Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton's injured right hip came back clean on Tuesday, according to a source, and he's considered day-to-day. Buxton was forced from Monday's win over the visiting division-rival Kansas City Royals at Target Field early due to hip discomfort and isn't in the starting lineup for Game 2 of the series on Tuesday.

However, it looks like the oft-injured outfielder has dodged a serious injury. If Buxton isn't available for the series finale on Wednesday, hopefully, he'll be back in there for a series opener in Texas on Thursday to face the Rangers. The 30-year-old former second overall pick in 2012 is actually on pace to play in over 100 games for just the second time in his career in 2024, and although he doesn't run much these days, he's been solid with a .275/.334/.528 slash line, 16 home runs, 49 RBI, six steals, and 54 runs in 90 games played.

Triston Casas Injury Update

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (rib) was back in action for Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday following a team off-day on Monday, launching a two-run homer against left-hander Kolby Allard in his rehab game. While it appears likely that Casas will remain with Worcester for the remainder of the week, he will almost certainly be activated no later than next Tuesday since his minor-league rehab assignment ends on Monday. The Red Sox are taking a very cautious approach with Casas, who has been out since late April with torn cartilage in the left rib cage.

Entering Tuesday's action, he had taken 30 at-bats in eight games in the minor leagues on his assignment. The 24-year-old slugging first baseman should provide high-end power numbers for Boston and fantasy managers when he returns, slashing .244/.344/.513 with six home runs, three doubles, and 10 RBI across 90 plate appearances this season.

Max Muncy Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy (oblique) played in his first rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, kicking off what will be about a week-long minor-league assignment. Muncy is scheduled to play seven innings on Tuesday, according to manager Dave Roberts. If all goes well during his rehab stint on his way back from a lengthy absence due to a strained right oblique, Muncy could be activated before the series opener against the Seattle Mariners next Monday.

The 33-year-old three-true-outcomes slugger was slashing .223/.323/.475 with nine home runs, eight doubles, and 28 RBI over 167 plate appearances (40 games) for the Dodgers before going on the injured list in the middle of May. He should slot right back into the heart of LA's batting order upon his return and help fantasy managers with power stats the rest of the way. (MLB.com)

Tommy Edman Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop/outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist, ankle) took part in his first rehab game with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday and is slated to play seven innings on Tuesday, according to manager Dave Roberts. Barring any setbacks, Edman is on schedule to return from wrist surgery and a sprained ankle and make his season and Dodgers debut next Monday against the Seattle Mariners.

Although it's unclear what kind of role he'll play right off the bat, Edman could eventually work his way into an everyday role in center field for the Dodgers down the stretch of the year. Even if he slots into the lower part of the batting order, the speedy 29-year-old switch-hitter will have legitimate fantasy upside as part of LA's vaunted lineup. Last year with the St. Louis Cardinals, Edman hit 25 doubles, scored 69 runs, and stole 27 bases in 137 games (479 at-bats). He makes a lot of sense as a stash across all formats.  (MLB.com)

Kerry Carpenter Injury Update

Detroit Tigers outfielder Kerry Carpenter (back) did not miss a beat in his first game back from the injured list in Tuesday's 15-1 rout of the Mariners. Carpenter, who had been on the IL since late May with a lumbar spine stress fracture, went 3-for-5 with a single, a solo home run, a two-run HR, and two strikeouts.

Carpenter drove a second-inning George Kirby fastball to the opposite field, launching it into the left-field bullpen. He got Kirby again in the fourth inning, this time crushing the ball into the right-field seats. The 26-year-old was on a hot streak before getting injured and now owns a .293/.349/.613 slash line with 10 HR, 23 runs scored, and 32 RBI in 168 plate appearances. He could be a fantasy asset down the stretch if he can pick up where he left off prior to his IL stint. (MLB.com)
