11 months agoKansas City Royals catcher prospect Blake Mitchell has been off to a solid start for Single-A Columbia. Mitchell, 19, is hitting .273 with two homers and six RBI. Mitchell was drafted out of high school with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 draft and has become the Royals No. 1 prospect. As one of the better hitting prospects behind the dish and at such a young age, Mitchell has the potential to offer plenty of power. However, to make a big leap, Mitchell will have to learn to be less aggressive at the plate. If Mitchell can improve his plate discipline and continue to tap into his raw power, he can have a bright future as the Royals catcher after Salvador Perez hangs it up. For now, he is a name for dynasty managers to monitor as he is years away from a potential big-league debut.--Daniel Burdeen - RotoBaller

4 months agoMLB Pipeline named catcher Blake Mitchell as the Kansas City Royals' top hitting prospect of the 2024 season. Mitchell, who was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft, enjoyed a solid first full taste of professional ball. Mitchell spent most of the summer with Single-A and held a .238/.376/.439 slash line. He tallied 16 doubles, 18 home runs, 50 RBI, and an impressive 25 stolen bases. He was one of just two catchers in the minor leagues who hit at least 18 home runs and swiped 18 bases. The other was Agustin Ramirez of the Marlins. Mitchell then moved up to High-A for his five final games of the season and tallied two hits during this stint. While the 20-year-old's MLB debut is still several seasons away, dynasty managers should continue to view him as a high-end catching prospect.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoKansas Royals catching prospect Blake Mitchell stayed hot at the plate on Wednesday evening by going 1-for-5 with another home run. This was his fourth round-tripper since the start of the month. During this stretch, the top prospect in Kansas City has carried an excellent .324/.425/.706 line with 10 RBI, one stolen base, and a 6:14 BB:K ratio. Overall, through his first look at Single-A ball, the former eighth-overall pick in last year's draft has held a steady .255/.389/.465 line with 16 home runs and 23 stolen bases through 93 games. MLB.com ranks Mitchell as the top prospect in Kansas City and recently moved him up to the 56th-best in the entire sport in their updated rankings this past week. Mitchell is still several seasons from the big leagues but is a name to keep a close eye on.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

8 months agoKansas City Royals catching prospect Blake Mitchell has begun to heat up at the plate and is breaking out of his prolonged slump. Across his past three games, the top prospect in Kansas City has tallied at least one hit in all of them with a home run, five RBI, and a 5:4 BB:K ratio. In his previous 16 games before this stretch, Mitchell carried a disappointing .170/.308/.245 line with just one long ball and one double. Overall, through his first look at Single-A ball, the 20-year-old has posted a .249/.391/.443 slash line. The former eighth-overall pick in last year's draft remains several seasons away from his major league debut but is developing into one of the better backstops in the minor leagues.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller

9 months agoKansas City Royals catching prospect Blake Mitchell has started to find his footing at Single-A and has been swinging an awfully hot bat over the past two weeks. In his last 10 games, the former eighth overall pick in last year's draft has been riding a dominant .350/.447/.675 line with two long balls, five RBI, one stolen base, and a 7:15 BB:K ratio. Prior to this stretch, the Sinton HS product held a poor .174 AVG in his previous nine games. Mitchell currently sits with a solid .264/.402/.480 line through his first 68 games at Single-A and could push for a late-season promotion to High-A if he continues to this great hitting in the batter's box.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
