Eury Perez 2024 Outlook: Tantalizing Upside at a Premium Price Point
12 months agoEury Perez had a successful rookie campaign for the Marlins at the tender age of 20, going 5-6 with a 3.15 ERA and 4.24 xFIP across 91⅓ IP. Perez flashed potential with his 28.9 K% and 8.3 BB%, but he also benefited from some luck if his .261 BABIP, 12% HR/FB, and 83.3% strand rate are any indication. If Perez is to justify his 71.88 ADP, he'll have to improve his base skills. Fortunately, he has the raw stuff to do just that. Perez's fastball averaged 2,635 RPM in 2023, ranking second among MLB qualifiers. It posted an 8.4 SwStr% and 62.3 Zone%. Perez also features two secondaries with huge whiff rates: a slider (22.7 SwStr%) and curve (20.6%). Both pitches had underwhelming Zone% (43 and 30.9, respectively) and chase rates (37.2% and 27.6%), giving Perez a clear area for improvement. Perez allowed a ton of flies in his first MLB season with a 54.8 FB%, so homers are another potential pitfall. Still, stuff like Perez's doesn't come around very often. You'll have to assume some risk to add his elite upside to your fantasy team.
