Brandon Williamson To Return Tuesday
Brandon Williamson (illness) will make his return to the starting rotation on Tuesday to face the Detroit Tigers after a bout with COVID. Williamson missed two weeks while on the COVID injured list, so even though it's a nice matchup against Detroit, the 25-year-old southpaw will be a pretty shaky fantasy streamer in his return to the mound. He looked good in his two starts before contracting the virus, but Williamson has been inconsistent in his 19 starts for the Reds in 2023, going 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA (4.51 FIP), 1.24 WHIP, 33 walks and 87 strikeouts in 98 2/3 innings pitched. Expect him to be on some sort of pitch count on Tuesday against the Tigers.

Brandon Williamson Leaves Early Tuesday With Injury
Brandon Williamson (elbow) left his outing early on Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves at Great American Ball Park with manager David Bell and a trainer during the second at-bat of the second inning with an apparent elbow injury. It looked as though Williamson was grabbing at his left elbow before leaving the contest. Before departing, he allowed three earned runs on three hits (two home runs) while walking two and striking out one in just 1 1/3 innings. Given the fact that the season is almost over, there's a good chance Williamson will be shut down the rest of the way, especially after missing the first five months of the year with a shoulder injury. The 26-year-old southpaw was making just his fourth appearance of 2024 (and third start) on Tuesday. In his first 13 innings, Williamson had allowed three runs (two earned) while walking three and fanning 11. UPDATE: Williamson was diagnosed with a left-elbow strain.

Brandon Williamson Targeting A September Return
Brandon Williamson (shoulder) will throw his first bullpen session on July 23 and is targeting a return in September. Williamson is battling a lesion on his left shoulder and hasn't been able to pitch at all to this point in 2024. The 26-year-old southpaw received an injection in his shoulder last month, though, and he's finally ready to resume throwing off a mound later this month. Eventually, Williamson will need a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment before he's an option to make his season debut in the big leagues. He made his big-league debut in 2023 and went 5-5 with a 4.46 ERA (4.63 FIP), 1.28 WHIP and a 98:39 K:BB in 117 innings over 23 starts. Williamson could be worth watching heading into the 2025 campaign, but fantasy managers can avoid him the rest of this season.

Brandon Williamson Won't Have Surgery
Brandon Williamson (shoulder) is going with the non-surgical route for his left shoulder, according to manager David Bell and will get injections instead and not throw for at least three weeks. While it's good news for Williamson now, it doesn't guarantee that he won't eventually need surgery on his shoulder if he continues to have issues once he resumes throwing in around a month. The 26-year-old southpaw has a lesion on his left shoulder and has yet to throw a pitch for the Reds in 2024. Williamson and the Reds are holding out hope that he can return later this year, but fantasy managers in single-year leagues shouldn't be quite as optimistic. The former second-rounder by the Seattle Mariners in 2019 out of TCU made his big-league debut last year for Cincy and went 5-5 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with 98 K's and 39 walks in 23 starts.

Brandon Williamson Could Miss The Entire Season
Brandon Williamson (shoulder) has been considering options that include season-ending surgery for a lesion in his left shoulder. Williamson hasn't pitched for the Reds at all this season and was pulled off a minor-league rehab assignment recently due to a setback with his throwing shoulder. Even if the 26-year-old southpaw avoids going under the knife, it would probably be a while before he's even an option for the big-league starting rotation. Fantasy managers that had been stashing him in mixed leagues may want to consider a change. The former second-rounder by the Seattle Mariners in 2019 out of TCU made his first 23 starts in the big leagues in 2023 and went 5-5 with a 4.46 ERA and 1.28 WHIP with a 98:39 K:BB in 117 innings pitched for the Reds.
