Jose Urena Agrees To Minor-League Deal With Nationals
Jose Urena agreed to a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. The 31-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment and released by the Colorado Rockies last week, but he'll land on his feet quickly with the rebuilding Nats. He has previous stops with the Miami Marlins, Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers in his nine-year career. Urena made five starts for the Rockies this year before they cut him loose, allowing 22 runs (20 earned) on 27 hits (a league-high nine home runs surrendered) while walking 14 and striking out nine in 18 1/3 innings. He will report to Triple-A Rochester and hope for better results and for an eventual call-up to D.C. Fantasy managers can ignore Urena for now.

Mets Sign Jose Urena To Minor-League Deal
Jose Urena to a minor-league deal on Thursday, and he is already in camp with the team. Urena essentially gives the Mets some starting-rotation insurance with both Frankie Montas (lat) and Sean Manaea (oblique) set to open the 2025 regular season on the injured list. the 33-year-old Dominican debuted in the big leagues in 2015 with the Miami Marlins and has appeared in 232 games (152 starts) covering 948 1/3 innings with six different teams. He most recently appeared in 33 games (eight starts) with the Texas Rangers in 2024 and went 5-8 with a 3.80 ERA (4.62 FIP), a 1.32 WHIP, one save, 70 strikeouts and 39 walks. If Urena makes the team's Opening Day roster, he'll likely start out in the bullpen as a long reliever, which wouldn't give him any real fantasy value.

Jose Urena Good To Start On Friday
Jose Urena (ankle, foot) said all is good with his left ankle/foot after he was hit by a comebacker in his last start on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. Urena will be good to make his next scheduled start on Friday for the start of a series against his old team, the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old veteran shouldn't be facing any pitch-count limitations on Friday in what is one of the better matchups a pitcher could ask for, so fantasy managers shouldn't overlook Urena as a streaming option. Urena has been surprisingly solid in his four starts for the Rangers and is 1-4 overall with a 3.53 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 30 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings over 14 outings (four starts). However, with Nathan Eovaldi back and Jon Gray (groin) potentially returning from the injured list next week, Urena could move back to the bullpen after his start on Friday.

Jose Urena Removed Early From Start On Friday
Jose Urena (ankle) was removed early from his start on Friday due to swelling in his right ankle. Urena was hit by a comebacker early in the game, and swelling began to increase as soon as he took the mound in the sixth inning. Texas Manager Bruce Bochy expressed that he was not concerned with the injury and that Urena would undergo further testing on Saturday. As of now, the 32-year-old should be expected to make his next start on Friday, May 31, against the Miami Marlins. Urena should only be rostered in deeper AL-only formats as he currently holds a 3.53 ERA and 1.27 WHIP and has tallied only 30 punchouts in 43 ⅓ innings this season. He should be expected to remain in the rotation for the foreseeable future but could shift to the bullpen once Max Scherzer (back), Nathan Eovaldi (groin), and Jon Gray (groin) all return from injuries.

Jose Urena Cracks Rangers Opening Day Roster
Jose Urena has made the team's Opening Day roster after inking a minor-league pact with the club this winter. The veteran has struggled mightily in recent seasons, working to a 6.45 ERA across 10 outings between the Rockies and White Sox in the 2023 season, although his 4.10 ERA in five outings with the White Sox was far superior to his 9.82 ERA in five appearances with the Rockies to begin the season. Urena's inability to miss bats has long plagued him as he sports a minuscule 15.5% K% in is career. He generates ground balls at a hearty 48.2% clip but has still surrendered a 1.24 HR/9 clip in his 199 career outings. He remains well off the fantasy radar moving forward.
